3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Learning to Write

3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Learning to Write

When you see authors on social media effortlessly publishing bestsellers, it's easy to forget the struggle behind the scenes. We see the book signing, the cover reveal, the 5-star reviews. We don't see the rejections, the late nights, the deleted chapters.

If I could go back to the beginning of my writing journey, I'd tell myself three things:

  1. Consistency beats intensity. Writing 200 words a day is better than writing 5,000 words once a month.
  2. Reading is part of the job. You can't output good words if you aren't inputting good words. Read everything.
  3. Your voice is your superpower. Don't try to sound like Hemingway or Rowling. Sound like you. That's what people connect with.
